South Bruny National Park walks

South Bruny National Park is where Bruny’s walks stop being a beach stroll and start being dolerite, wind, and time. The things to do hub is the short list. This note is the Parks-oriented version: grades, honesty, and what not to stack on a day trip.

A parks pass is required in the park — including Cape Bruny Lighthouse precinct, Jetty Beach, Cloudy Bay campgrounds, and the long circuits. The Neck lookout sits on a different boundary. Buy the pass on official Parks Tasmania channels. We do not publish a price. If a track note here ever disagrees with Parks, believe Parks — reroutes happen.

Grass Point — the one that can fit a day

About 4 km return, Grade 2, roughly 1.5 hours, from Adventure Bay. Old whaling-station remnants, coastal walking, the friendly option with children who can handle a track. Unpatrolled coast. This is the walk to choose if you still have a ferry to catch and you already did The Neck and Great Bay.

It is not nothing. It is also not Fluted Cape.

Fluted Cape — clockwise, or not at all

About 4 km, Grade 4, about 2.5 hours, clockwise only. Unprotected cliff edges. Sea eagles if you are looking up. Not a pram walk, not a casual family circuit, not a “quick add-on” before a mid-afternoon sailing.

People get this walk wrong by treating the grade like a suggestion and the direction like folklore. Walk clockwise. Keep off the edge. Turn around if the wind or the group is wrong.

White wallabies are often seen in paddocks near the Adventure Bay / track entrance at dusk. Do not chase them for a photograph on your way to a cliff.

Labillardiere Peninsula — a wilderness day

18 km circuit, Grade 4, 5.5–6.5 hours, from the Jetty Beach / park side. This is a wilderness day, not a day-trip add-on and not a lighthouse extra. Carry water, layers, and a plan that does not include a cheese queue at both ends.

East Cloudy Head and Cloudy Bay

East Cloudy Head is about 12 km, Grade 4, around 4 hours, for people who already like Cloudy Bay. The bay itself is a long, exposed beach with rips that punish casual swimmers. Beautiful. Serious. A Parks campground if you have booked and you like weather.

Do not treat Cloudy Bay as Adventure Bay with more Instagram. The mood is the Southern Ocean, not a swimming enclosure.

Cape Bruny is a walk to a tower, not a circuit

The lighthouse precinct is a steep path, cliff edges, a small museum, and a guided spiral if you have booked a tour. It is in the park. It is about 1 hour 15 minutes from Roberts Point, last stretch Lighthouse Road (C629), partly unsealed. It is a half-day destination. It is not a warm-up for Labillardiere.

What not to stack

• Fluted Cape + Labillardiere + a cruise.
• Lighthouse tour + East Cloudy Head + a late official ferry.
• Any Grade 4 circuit + “we will also just see the penguins” on the same tired legs without a bed.

A day trip from Hobart should usually keep park walks to Grass Point or skip them. Overnight is how the park becomes calm. Two or three nights is how you stop choosing.

North Bruny coastal walks (visitors look up Cape Queen Elizabeth) are a different geography — more time north of The Neck, different parking. Do not steal them from a south-park day.

Safety without a lecture

None of these beaches are patrolled. Cliffs are unprotected where Parks says they are. Weather on the south coast is not Hobart’s waterfront. Tell someone your circuit. Carry water. Drive slowly after dark if you return via the isthmus — wildlife uses the road.

This is Nuenonne country. Walk as a guest. Whaling remnants at Grass Point are history, not set dressing.

How a walk sits next to the ferry

Hobart to Kettering is about 40 minutes. The crossing is about 15 minutes plus queue. Roberts Point to Adventure Bay is another half hour of island driving if you came via The Neck. That is already a morning. Grass Point can still fit. Fluted Cape can fit if you stayed or you started very early and you dropped the lighthouse.

Labillardiere cannot fit a same-day return unless the walk is the trip and you like finishing in the dark. Most people should not like that. Book the Jetty Beach camp or a Lunawanna bed and give the peninsula a proper day.
