Plan

The best time to visit Bruny Island

There is no bad season on Bruny — just different trade-offs between light, weather, wildlife and crowds.

Bruny Island’s cool temperate maritime climate means mild summers, cool winters and weather that can change in an afternoon. Pack layers whatever the month.

Season by season

Summer (December–February)

Long days and the warmest weather make summer the most popular time to visit. Little penguins and short-tailed shearwaters are active at The Neck, berries are in season and beaches are at their best. Expect busy ferries, especially on weekends — book ahead.

Autumn (March–May)

Often the most settled weather of the year, with calm mornings, golden light and fewer crowds after Easter. A great time for walking and cruising.

Winter (June–August)

Cold, quiet and atmospheric. Days are short and southerly fronts bring wind and rain, but you may have lookouts and beaches nearly to yourself. Whales may be seen offshore during migration.

Spring (September–November)

Wildflowers bloom in the heathlands of the Labillardiere Peninsula, seabirds return, and the island turns green. Weather is changeable, with sunny days and cold snaps.

Our recommendation

For a first visit, late summer to mid-autumn offers a good balance of weather, wildlife and manageable crowds. If you want penguins at The Neck, choose the warmer months and stay overnight — see where to stay.

Packing list for any season

  • Warm and windproof layers, even in summer.
  • A waterproof jacket.
  • Sturdy walking shoes.
  • Sun protection — the UV in Tasmania is strong.
