North Bruny

Gentle farmland, sheltered bays and the quieter side of Bruny Island.

Most visitors drive straight through North Bruny on the way south, but it rewards a slower look. The landscape is softer — rolling paddocks, eucalypt woodland and calm bays facing the D’Entrecasteaux Channel.

Highlights

  • Dennes Point. The northern tip, with a sandy beach, jetty and views towards the mainland. Lovely at sunset.
  • Barnes Bay. A sheltered bay popular with boaters.
  • Great Bay producers. Oysters, cheese and other producers sit along the main road near Great Bay. Food and drink.
  • Roberts Point. The ferry terminal. Ferry guide.

Where to stay

North Bruny has a scattering of cottages and retreats — ideal if you want peace and quiet within easy reach of the ferry. See where to stay.

Getting around

Roads in North Bruny are a mix of sealed and gravel. Dennes Point is about 15 minutes from the ferry.

A slower North Bruny loop

If you have an extra half-day, try this gentle loop from the ferry: drive north to Dennes Point for a beach walk and coffee, return via Barnes Bay to watch the boats in the sheltered anchorage, then continue south to the producers around Great Bay before crossing The Neck. It avoids the stream of traffic that heads straight south after each ferry arrives.

What North Bruny is like

The north is mostly private farmland and bush, so public access is concentrated at beaches, jetties and road reserves. Respect private property and farm gates. In summer the bays are good for swimming on calm days; in winter they are moody and beautiful. Birdlife is rich along the shoreline — look for oystercatchers, herons and, overhead, white-bellied sea eagles.

Good to know

  • There is limited food and no fuel at Dennes Point — plan ahead.
  • North Bruny is closest to the ferry, which makes it practical if you want to catch an early boat home.
  • The channel views towards the mainland and kunanyi/Mount Wellington are best in clear morning light.
