Cloudy Bay is a broad, exposed surf beach in South Bruny National Park, facing the Southern Ocean. It is a place for long walks, surfing (for experienced surfers only) and simply watching the swell roll in.

Getting there
From Lunawanna, follow Cloudy Bay Road south — it is gravel for much of the way. A parks pass is required. Allow around 20–25 minutes.
Cloudy Corner campground
At the eastern end of the beach is Cloudy Corner campground, a beautiful but basic site. Access may involve driving along the beach, which needs a suitable 4WD and attention to tides and sand conditions. See camping on Bruny Island.
Safety
- The surf is powerful with strong rips; the beach is not patrolled.
- Weather can change quickly — bring warm layers.
- Do not attempt beach driving without the right vehicle and experience.
Nearby
Combine Cloudy Bay with a visit to Cape Bruny Lighthouse, or see the South Bruny National Park guide for more walks.

What to do at Cloudy Bay
- Walk the beach. The sand stretches for several kilometres between rocky headlands — perfect for a long, bracing walk.
- Watch the surf. On big swell days the waves are spectacular. Surfing here is for experienced surfers only.
- Picnic at Cloudy Corner. The eastern end has sheltered spots among the coastal scrub.
- Look for wildlife. Shorebirds feed along the tide line, and wallabies graze in the scrub at dusk.
When to visit
Cloudy Bay is magnificent in any weather, but it is exposed to southerly winds. Calm, clear days in late summer and autumn are the most pleasant. In winter, wrap up warmly and enjoy having it almost to yourself.
